Various types of rum include White (clear) Rum, Gold (pale) Rum, Dark Rum, Spiced or flavoured Rum, Aged Rum. Light grade white rums are commonly used in cocktails, whereas “golden” and “dark” rums were typically consumed neat or on the rocks, or used for cooking. Premium rums are consumed either straight or iced.
Below are some exotic white rum preparation you can enjoy this summer or year round. Fresh fruit juices, sugar syrup, lime juice and ginger beer are some of the ingredients which go with white rum.
- The Pina colada
Escape the summery beaches with a glass of Pina colada. Blend few pieces of fresh pineapple with some ice. To this add 2 ounces white rum, 2 ounces pineapple juice, 2 ounces coconut cream and with a dash of sugar syrup (optional). Mix it up until it is smooth. Pour into a chilled glass and garnish with a pineapple slice.
- The Daiquiri
It is one of the oldest Cuban drinks. Fill a shaker with crushed ice, 1 ½ ounces white rum, 3/4th ounces lime juice and ½ ounce sugar syrup. Shake well until frothy. Pour into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with a slice of lime.
- White rum martini with ginger ale
Vigorously shake 1 ounce spiced white rum, 1 ounce Rose’s Lime Juice with ¼ ounce of ginger ale and white sangria (like Slices), each. Serve in martini glasses.
- The Classic Rum Punch
Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add 20ml lime juice, 40ml sugar syrup, 60ml rum (I favour Appleton V/X for this). Shake or stir, as you like. It’s a very laid back drink. Strain into a chilled tumbler full of ice. Garnish with a slice of orange, or a maraschino cherry if you like.
- The Hurricane
Add juice of ½ a lime, 1 ¾ ounces white rum, 1 ¾ ounces dark rum, 2 ounces passion fruit juice, 1 ounce orange juice, 1 tablespoon sugar syrup, tablespoon of grenadine and ice to a cocktail shaker. Shake it well. Strain into a glass, and garnish with slices of orange sand a maraschino cherry.
- Electric Shark
In a cocktail shaker, add ½ ounce spiced rum, 1 ounce blue curacao, 2 ounces, 2 ounces pineapple juice and 2 ounces ginger and shake it well. Pour in a chilled glass with ice. Garnish it with a pineapple leaf, add a dash of ginger beer and your drink is ready to serve.
- The Fall Fizz
In a cocktail shaker add ice 1 ½ ounce white rum, 1 ½ ounce pomegranate juice, ½ ounce fresh lime juice, 2 ounces pear juice and shake it well. Pour it in a glass and top it with ginger ale. Garnish your drink with pear slices and pomegranate seeds.
- Bon Voyage
In an Ice filled glass add ½ ounce of spiced rum, ¼ ounce of vodka, ¼ ounce tequila, ¼ ounce gin, ¼ ounce curacao liqueur, 2ounces sweet and sour mix, 2 ounces lemn lime soda. Stir the mixture gently and your cocktail is ready.
- Frozen Spiced mint Rum
Mix 1 ½ ounce of spiced rum, 2 ounces fresh lime, 1 ounce of sugar syrup and 10-12 mint leaves. Blend it until smooth. Serve it in a glass mug with mint leaves garnishing.
- Refreshing summer mojito
In a saucepan add 6 ¾ ounces sugar, 6 ¾ ounces water and a 5-6 fresh basil leaves. Heat until the sugar dissolves and let it cool. Strain into a jar to remove the basil leaves. Put 2 large cherry tomatoes and a large chunk of watermelon into the bottom of a cocktail shaker and muddle. Add a pinch of salt and pepper with a drop of extra virgin olive oil. Add 1 ¾ ounces 3 year old rum, ¾ ounce lemon juice and ½ ounce of the basil infused syrup. Add ice. Shake well and double strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a basil leaf.
